The Nokia N73 is a third generation phone in a candy bar design. Its screen with 262,000 colors and 240 x 320 pixel resolution is arguably the best among high end mobile instruments. But the size of the keypad, small for the screen-size, reminds us of its forebear, the N 70.

(Caution: The keys are spaced so close together that it enhances the chances of hitting other keys than those intended, especially when using shortcut keys.)

The N73 is chockfull of features: a Carl Zeiss, CMOS sensor, 3.2 megapixel high resolution, 2048×1536 pixels, digital zoom up to 20x, integrated flash with operating range up to 1m, macro mode, and color tone like normal, sepia, B&W, vivid and negative, and macro mode with 10 cm focus distance. This is a clear bid by Nokia to reach out to high end users who are passionate about technology.

Prints up to 10″ x 8″ reveal good photo quality made possible by the Carl Zeiss optic lens. Movement distortion is minimized by the advanced auto-focus coupled with the mechanical shutter, so as to produce crisper images even when light conditions are low.

A variety of formats like MP3, AAC, eAAC, eAAC+, WMA with play lists and equalizer are supported by the built-in digital music player. Music formats like MP3, AAC, EAAC, EAAC+ and WMA can also be enjoyed, apart from FM radio with visual radio support. Just a few clicks will help you switch from one track to other. Your music experience gets more enjoyable with enhanced music features like an equalizer, and bass boost.

You can store ring-tones, video clippings, images, and other applications, with the internal dynamic memory of upto 42 MB. There is support for 1 GB miniSD card which enables you to store more pictures and video clippings. Video recording is possible for a maximum of 90 minutes. You can also transfer photos and videos using Bluetooth, USB and infrared connectivity.

Support for miniSD card translates into more music files and pictures, apart from providing space especially when you come across something interesting or clickable or to get your favorite tracks. Photos (3.2 megapixel) up to 1219 photos and Music (eAAC+) up to 1092 tracks can also be stored in the internal memory.

If you want to listen to music you don’t have to press so many buttons just to access the files. The review key allows you to access photos and videos and direct access to multimedia application is provided by multimedia keys.

You can transfer your tracks to your device using Nokia Music Manager application in PC suite. Videos and games are directly downloadable from the net to your phone. To review, send, post on your blog or print them, you just have to use one key. Impressive slideshows with pan-and-zoom effects and stereo music can also be created.

The phone has anti-virus protection. Battery life includes talk time of up to 3 hours and standby time of 300 hours.

In short, the Nokia N73 is more than a phone; it is a mini PC, if the crowded keys don’t matter to you.
