The Nokia N73 is a third generation phone in a candy bar design. Its screen with 262,000 colors and 240 x 320 pixel resolution is arguably the best among high end mobile instruments. But the size of the keypad, small for the screen-size, reminds us of its forebear, the N 70.

(Caution: The keys are spaced so close together that it enhances the chances of hitting other keys than those intended, especially when using shortcut keys.)

The N73 is chockfull of features: a Carl Zeiss, CMOS sensor, 3.2 megapixel high resolution, 2048×1536 pixels, digital zoom up to 20x, integrated flash with operating range up to 1m, macro mode, and color tone like normal, sepia, B&W, vivid and negative, and macro mode with 10 cm focus distance. This is a clear bid by Nokia to reach out to high end users who are passionate about technology.

Prints up to 10″ x 8″ reveal good photo quality made possible by the Carl Zeiss optic lens. Movement distortion is minimized by the advanced auto-focus coupled with the mechanical shutter, so as to produce crisper images even when light conditions are low.

A variety of formats like MP3, AAC, eAAC, eAAC+, WMA with play lists and equalizer are supported by the built-in digital music player. Music formats like MP3, AAC, EAAC, EAAC+ and WMA can also be enjoyed, apart from FM radio with visual radio support. Just a few clicks will help you switch from one track to other. Your music experience gets more enjoyable with enhanced music features like an equalizer, and bass boost.

You can store ring-tones, video clippings, images, and other applications, with the internal dynamic memory of upto 42 MB. There is support for 1 GB miniSD card which enables you to store more pictures and video clippings. Video recording is possible for a maximum of 90 minutes. You can also transfer photos and videos using Bluetooth, USB and infrared connectivity.

Support for miniSD card translates into more music files and pictures, apart from providing space especially when you come across something interesting or clickable or to get your favorite tracks. Photos (3.2 megapixel) up to 1219 photos and Music (eAAC+) up to 1092 tracks can also be stored in the internal memory.

If you want to listen to music you don’t have to press so many buttons just to access the files. The review key allows you to access photos and videos and direct access to multimedia application is provided by multimedia keys.

You can transfer your tracks to your device using Nokia Music Manager application in PC suite. Videos and games are directly downloadable from the net to your phone. To review, send, post on your blog or print them, you just have to use one key. Impressive slideshows with pan-and-zoom effects and stereo music can also be created.

The phone has anti-virus protection. Battery life includes talk time of up to 3 hours and standby time of 300 hours.

In short, the Nokia N73 is more than a phone; it is a mini PC, if the crowded keys don’t matter to you.

The world’s cheapest car hasn’t ended. The Nano should be presented this year, but the mission began back in 2003, when Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors and the billion Tata corporation, set a challenge to build a “people’s car.” Tata gave an engineering team, led by 32-year-old star engineer Girish Wagh, three chucks for the new vehicle: It should be low-cost, adhere to regulatory requirements, and achieve performance targets such as fuel efficiency and acceleration capacity. The design team initially came up with a vehicle which had bars instead of doors and plastic flaps to keep out the monsoon rains.

It’s called the Nano, for its high technology, small size and for its cheap price. Tata Nano automobile is cute and squash. It’s a complete four-door car. Tata nano gas engine is a 623-cc engine, gets 50 miles to the gallon, and the seats up to five. It’s 8% smaller in outer length than its closest rival, Suzuki’s Maruti 800, but has 21% more volume inside. It is the most inexpensive car in the world. Starting this fall, the Nano will roll off the assembly lines at a Tata Motors plant in Singur, Bengal, and navigate India’s potholed roads.
Tata nano cars, also known as the People’s Car, is Ratan Tata’s dream come true, and is India’s contribution to changing the global auto industry. The car has put India on the global map. Tata has done in four years what the Japanese took 30 years to do. It will change the whole industry.” Even rivals are gushing. “It’s a red letter day for Indian industry, a day India should be proud of,” says Venu Srinivasan, chairman of motorcycle maker TVS Motors. “Ratan Tata has the vision to create a new business model and all the naysayer are looking at it with concern. The Nano is a path breaker.”

According to a public survey, Indian auto industry will stand in a special position by the year 2014. It will come forward as the fourth-largest light vehicle market in the world, riding on low-cost cars. India will be seen ahead of countries like Germany, Russia and Brazil in the years to come.

With Tata Nano and low-cost cars from Renault/Nissan and Hyundai hitting the Indian roads, the MINI CAR segment would lead. By 2014, the light vehicle sales are expected to reach a mark of 4.5 millions units.

According to analyst, “The demand for the low-cost car will be a great hit for the two-wheeler sales and also the people’s car Tata Nano would challenge Maruti Suzuki for market leadership.”

In the year 2007, the sales figure of light vehicle in India stood at 1.7 million units whereas America topped the list with 16 millions units. China was at seven millions, Japan – five millions, Germany – 3.4 millions and Italy at 2.7 millions units. With the growing demand for light vehicles, India will be able to reach the fourth position by 2014.

Don’t worry about brands of lights. Light is light, and it doesn’t matter who made the instrument. What you really need to worry about is how many lights you can get, what you’re pointing them at, and who’s going to be in charge of setting them up? Since you’re working with little/no budget you have to make the most of your resources. Have you considered using *no* lights? If you’ve never heard of Dogma films, then take a while to read about them.

The Dogma films prove that quality movies can be made with no outside lighting at all, and it’s definitely worth a look.

If you’re determined to use outside lights, then you’re going to have to get them from somewhere. Borrowing or renting is the way to go, as buying them will be prohibitively expensive. If you go the rental route, be sure to mention that you’re a student / indie filmmaker. Many rental houses will cut you a break now in hopes of keeping your business later.

The next key thing to worry about is who’s in charge of the lights. A competent cinematographer can do more with four well-placed lights than an amateur with a truck full of equipment. Get someone with experience shooting on DV, and take full advantage of what they know. Make sure they can shoot *your* kind of movie, as well. Someone who’s shot twenty horror films and nothing else might be completely useless if you’re making a romantic comedy.

There are a million books on cinema lighting, and I can’t really say that there’s one best one out there. If you don’t have much of a background in lighting then the most basic place you should start is reading up on three-point lighting.

Last but not least, read a little about color temperature, color correcting gels, diffusion, and the tools you need to cut & shape lights (flags, silks, nets, cookies). Those fine touches are what separate amateur lighting (which looks doubly worse on video) from professional level work.
